University of Calgary Programs:
Currently, the University of Calgary
offers more than 100 programs for students to choose from. All
programs are offered under the umbrella of faculties and therefore,
students must meet the two separate but equally important sets
of requirements to be allowed to apply for graduation:
-
Faculty Requirements
- Program Requirements
Many popular faculties such as Faculty of Engineering,
Faculty of Science and Haskayne School of Business require students
to take Math249 (Introduction to Calculus). All student who wish
to take Math249 must scored at least 70% in Math30. If not, students
are required to pass Mathematics Diagnostic Test in order to be
admitted into Math249. Students with Math31 should enroll in Math251
instead. As students are often poorly prepared for either Math249,
the dropout and failing rates of this course remain one of the highest
among all university classes.
Math249 / Math251 - Strategic Advantage:
On the other hand, Math249 remains immensely popular because it
opens up options for many first years undecided students. Students
are allowed to change their initial program choices in the following
academic semester however, the newly chosen programs might contain
very different requirements at both the Faculty and Program levels.
Given that all faculties accept Math241/Math259 as one of the optional
subjects, first year students can strategically enrolling in Math241
or Math259 classes to avoid delays due to changes in their later
academic years.
