University of Calgary Admission:
From Guarantee Entrance to Competitive System
Competitive System (putting good students
first)
With the competitive system, there is no safe haven
for students. Applicants are expected to out perform others
to gain admission offers. Admission to all faculties at the
University of Calgary are on a pure competitive basis. For each
faculty, the final minimum score(s) required to secure an offer
of admission will only be determined once the qualifications
of all applicants are accessed.
High School student applications are now considered on the basis
of their averages over the five
appropriate subjects. The Fall 2003 statistics shows the
last student admitted into the Faculty of Engineering possessed
a high school average of 76%, where the Haskayne School of Business's
cutoff was at 80%. Due to its competitive bases, if the Faculty
of Engineering has just received many high scores students,
the scoring cutoff may be increased to 78% or above. Note that
all faculty has a "quota" regarding the number of
first year students they can admit in a school year and therefore,
the more popular the faculty is, the more likely that the cutoff
score will be higher the very next year.
