New Mathematics Programs

Under the Common Curriculum Framwork developed by seven ministries of education (Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Saskatchewan and Yukon Territory), a common mathematics cirriculum has been derived back in 2008 and is to be implemented in September of 2010 in Alberta.

It is believed that a common curriculum with standardized achievement standards would improve student learning experiences, foster future learning and improve accountability of educators.

Students entering Gr.10 (Senior High) in September 2010 are placed into this newly developed system while the former system will be phased out in subseqent years.

Under the new system, parents and students entering Gr.10 starting in September 2010 are presented with two choices:

  1. Mathematics 10C (recommended, see below)
  2. Mathematics 10-3

The proposed roadmap (Mathematics Grades1-12, 2008) can be presented as the following:

"-1"
This program is specifically designed for students who plan to attend post-secondary programs that require Calculus. Faculties such as Engineering, Medicine, Law, Business, Science, Nursing, Kinesiology and selective majors (Archaeology, Economics, Geography and Psychology) in Social Sciences are good examples.

"-2"
This program is specifically designed for students who plan to attend post-secondary programs that DO NOT require Calculus. Examples include faulties of Fine Arts, Communication and Culture and Humanilities.

"-3"
This program is specifically designed for students for entry into majority of trades and for direct entry to the work force.

We strongly recommend students to enroll in Mathematics 10C in Gr.10. Students finishing Math30-1 have the option to attend post-secondary programs that do not require Calculus or simply enter the workforce directly. On the contrary, a student with Math30-3 or -2 will have to revert back to upgrade to Math30-1 or upgrade through other routes as an adult learner (minimum 21 years of age) if he decides to enter post-secondary programs.
